How to Set up Tax Rules in Magento 2

Tax Rules configuration is essential for Magento 2 store. Users are expected to apply it to every single orders on specific website. the tax rules must associates with customer tax class and product tax class with certain tax rates. Depending on those features, Magento 2 will automatically calculate the tax amount for each order of the store.

This tutorial will guide you though the process of setting the Tax Rules for your Magento 2 store(s).

1. Tax Rules Setting

1. Login to the back end of your Magento 2 store.

2. From the Admin sidebar, navigate to Stores > Taxes > Tax Rules.

3. Hit the Add New Tax Rule button on the upper right corner of the work space.

4. Explore the Tax Rule Information section:

Enter name for the new rule in the box of Name.

In the drop down list of Tax Rate, select one to activate the rule. Notice that you can also edit the existing tax rate by hitting the editing icon on the right hand side at the end of each tax rate row. Remember to click Save after editing. You can also add new tax rate by click on the Add New Tax Rate button.

5. Configure the Additional Settings section

Explore the Additional Settings section in the Tax Rule tab.

In the Customer Tax Class:

  • Click Edit icon to modify and remember to Save.
  • Click Add New Tax Class to create more tax classes and enter all necessary information. Click Save to finish.

In the Product Tax Class :

  • Click Edit icon to modify and remember to Save.
  • Click Add New Tax Class to create more tax classes and enter all necessary information. Click Save to finish.

In the Priority section, set the hierarchy of the priority to enable the tax applied.

Mark the Calculate off Subtotal Only to check out tax on the order subtotal value.

Arrange Sort Order to set the list of tax rules.

Click Save Rule to finish.

2. Tax Rates Edit

In order to edit tax rate, we will click on the Edit icon like this:

We can edit the tax rates by two methods: manually editing and importing tax rates.

1. Manually Editing

Tab Add New Tax Rate button.

Complete all the information required for the form.

Click Save to save all the procedure.

2. Import the Tax Rates from the existing file

Import the Tax Rates

Explore the Adding Settings section:

  • Hit Choose File button to upload the prepared CSV file from the browser.
  • Click Import Tax Rate button.
  • Click Export Tax Rate button to export the file.
